Gmail: New design for Gmail is coming

From February 8th, the first users of Gmail are supposed to new desktop design get to see. Google Workspace customers will be the first to do so, but the announcement says the new look will become the general standard for everyone over time. In addition to minor improvements to the design, the focus is primarily on the integration of other Google services.

Gmail would like to change in the future present as a central pointwhen it comes to communication. In the new sidebar, Gmail is just one of many icons, alongside Chat, Spaces and Meet. So far, the services on the desktop can only be reached after clicking on the menu icon. With the new design, pop-up notifications – for example from Google Chat – are displayed directly in Gmail.

Google speaks of an “integrated view”, which is initially only offered as an option, but then in April 2022 the new standard on the desktop will be charged. Users can still revert to the old view through the end of Q2, they say (source: Google Workspace Updates). Only after that will the new layout become the only standard. At that time, Google Chat will also receive an “optimized navigation experience”.
