New headquarters – This company relies on rail and sustainability

In the future, the cement, concrete and raw materials business in the Alps-Adriatic region will be managed in Wietersdorf under the Alpacem brand.

The new corporate headquarters of Wietersdorfer Alpacem GmbH was officially opened on Friday. “Alpa” stands for the Alpe-Adria region and “cem” for cement. In the future, the entire concrete and raw materials business will be controlled from Wietersdorf. And the building, which was of course built with CO2-optimized cement from the company, plays every role in terms of sustainability. Ecological footprint minimized “Our new headquarters also reflects the efforts towards CO2-neutral cement production,” says Bernhard Auer, who Managing Director of Alpacem GmbH. A total of six million euros were invested in this. The heating and cooling of the building is implemented in the walls and ceilings. There is a PV system to operate the heat pump. Auer: “We completely forego fossil fuels.” Director Lutz Weber: “Using the most modern technologies, we have managed to reduce the ecological footprint to a minimum.”Everything on railThe company in the Görtschitztal is constantly working to protect the climate. Among other things, the market leader for cement and concrete is a pioneer when it comes to rail, transporting more and more freight by rail. “In Wietersdorf the tracks have been expanded to be fit for rail transport,” says ÖBB manager Christopher Prax-Huber. Rail transport has been continuously expanded for four years. Prax-Huber: “We travel with full wagons to Styria to Voestalpine and back.” Almost 90,000 tons are transported by train: “That saves 3,600 trucks every year.” Rail transport has already increased by 25 percent compared to 2023. Weber: “We are working massively on how we can reduce even more CO2 in the future.” Another goal is for more companies in the valley to shift their transport to rail in the future.
