New high in 2021 – Swiss chickens laid over three million eggs every day – News

  • Chickens laid 1.1 billion eggs in Switzerland last year – that’s an average of over 3 million eggs a day.
  • This means that around two thirds of the eggs consumed are produced domestically.
  • According to the Federal Office for Agriculture (FOAG), domestic egg production increased by 7.7 percent last year.

It has increased above all with free-range and organic eggs: compared to 2012, almost three times more free-range eggs and more than twice as many organic eggs were produced.

Overall, the Swiss consumed 1.7 billion eggs last year, or 194 eggs per capita. This corresponds to an increase of 57 million eggs (3.4 percent).

Egg as a protein source plays a bigger role

According to the FOAG, the reason for the increasing demand is the growing population and changing consumer behavior, in which eggs play a greater role as a source of protein. In an international comparison, however, Swiss egg consumption is still low, it was said: twice as many eggs were eaten in Singapore.
