New “Hunger Games” film to be released in 2026

The film adaptation of “Sunrise on the Reaping” is scheduled to hit US theaters on November 20, 2026. like the US industry magazine “Variety” reported, citing an official statement from the production company Lionsgate. Francis Lawrence (53) is being considered as director, having directed all parts of the extremely popular film series since the second “Hunger Games” film “Catching Fire” in 2013.

This is what “Sunrise on the Reaping” is about

Collins’ new work tells the story of the 50th Hunger Games. 24 years before the events involving Katniss Everdeen, special and particularly cruel Hunger Games take place. During the so-called jubilee, twice the number of tributes rush into the arena. A character already known to fans also takes part in the 50th Hunger Games: fan favorite Haymitch Abernathy, who was played by Woody Harrelson (62) in the first four parts of the film series.

The new “Hunger Games” film is therefore also a so-called prequel. As in “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes”, which was released in 2023, a prequel is told. The most recently released, fifth “Hunger Games” film grossed over $337 million at the worldwide box office on a reported budget of $100 million. The entire film series has grossed over $3.3 billion so far.
