In other countries, Lidl has already taken the step, and now a new technology is also to be used in Germany. As “Retail Optimiser” reports, the discounter will soon set up self-checkouts in many branches. These are cash registers that customers can easily use themselves to scan and pay for groceries and other goods.
First, Lidl had tried some self-checkout systems in Great Britain and Switzerland. The new systems were apparently so well received there that the step is now being taken to Germany. There are already a few selected branches where the machines can be found. It is not yet known exactly when the other Lidl locations will be upgraded.

Basically, the self-checkouts work like the competition. Customers can scan each item using the barcode, weigh fruit and vegetables with a scale, and make changes on the touch display. In the future, they also want to integrate the Lidl app into the process. Customers will then be able to scan in products with their smartphones and possibly also pay directly in the app.
If you don’t feel like using the self-service checkouts, you don’t have to do without shopping. The classic tills will remain in the Lidl branches. The self-service offer is primarily aimed at customers who only want to buy a few items and avoid long queues when other customers do their weekly shopping.
