New Lancia Ypsilon: electrons, velvet and silver


The Lancia Ypsilon is reborn under the Stellantis emblem. However, the verb reborn is perhaps not the most appropriate, the old generation Ypsilon still appearing in the top 3 of sales in Italy, the only country where Lancia was still marketed. Moreover, sales of the city car increased by 9.6% to reach 44,000 units.

Its descendant tries to preserve the spirit of the brand. The Ypsilon 2024 draws on the Pu+Ra HPE concept car presented last April, itself taking inspiration from the Stratos and the Delta. Grille, lights, lettering, interior inspired by the world of luxury furniture: Stellantis did not just make up an e-208.

From the side, this new Ypsilon is strongly reminiscent of the 208, with which it shares the platform. The Lancia logo is not enough to blur the base, the same goes for the wheel arches.

The vehicle is produced in Spain, in Zaragoza to be precise. This is also where its cousins ​​Opel and Peugeot assemble. Moreover, the CMF platform is common to all three cars.

The Lancia is the largest of the trio, at 4.08 m in length, 1.76 m in width and 1.44 m in height.

The trunk, however, is reduced to 309 l, and the rear seats seem a little narrow. She’s a city car after all.

Who says Lancia says luxurious interior, while remaining accessible. The design draws on the world of high-end furniture. And when we say “pickaxe”, it is literally since parts were made in partnership with the manufacturer Cassina. The central tray covered in leather mimics coffee tables. The blue leather and velvet of the seats take you back to the 70s. The Italian atmosphere is essential. But will this be enough to succeed the bestseller that was the old edition?

For the engines, it will only be electric at first. The 115 kW (156 hp) motor is powered by a battery with a capacity of 51 kWh. The torque of 260 Nm is, electrically required, available almost instantly. A HF (High Fidelity) version of 240 hp will arrive in 2025, as well as a hybrid variant.

Lancia promises a gain of 100 km of autonomy in 10 minutes and charging from 20% to 80% in 24 minutes. In the WLTP cycle, the electric Ypsilon can travel 400 km on a full charge. Speaking of load, the city car is heavy: 1584 kilos. The battery has a lot to do with it.

Finally, the prices hurt: you will have to pay €39,990 for this first edition.
