Until now, Essen has been a symbol of chaos in the AfD: the party ousted its chairman Bernd Lucke there in 2015. This time, the party conference has been conducted in a disciplined manner, at least so far. The board elections have gone off without a hitch.
The AfD has filled five of fourteen positions in its federal executive board. At a federal party conference in Essen on Saturday, the delegates relatively quietly confirmed the co-chairs Tino Chrupalla and Alice Weidel for another two years in office. Both were able to significantly improve their voting results compared to the previous board election two years ago. Weidel is now the only woman on the new board.
Only one of three deputy posts was filled in Essen. Mariana Harder-Kühnel, a member of the Bundestag from Hesse, who did not stand for re-election, was replaced by her North Rhine-Westphalian parliamentary colleague Kay Gottschalk into the second row of the party. Gottschalk was previously the AfD’s vice-chairman. He received almost 62 percent of the votes. His opponent, the Baden-Württemberg Bundestag member Dirk Spaniel, received 30 percent.
There were no changes in the other two deputy positions behind Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla: Stephan Brandner and Peter Boehringer were clearly confirmed in office with 90.77 and 85.35 percent of the votes, without any opposition. The figures do not include abstentions.
The AfD is looking forward to “Donald”
Marc Youngwho was proposed by Chrupalla, won the position of assessor with almost 55 percent against Christina Baum, who is considered a representative of the far-right wing of the party and who spoke out against “cowardice” in her application speech. Jongen is a former member of the Bundestag and a member of the newly elected European Parliament. He said he hoped for a victory for Republican Donald Trump in the US presidential election: “Donald will be great again – and we are looking forward to it.”
Treasurer Carsten HütterSecretary Dennis Hohloch and assessors Martin Reichardt were each confirmed in office without competition. Against a member of the Bavarian state parliament, Roman Reusch who now remains an assessor. The lawyer stressed that the AfD needs his expertise because he can continue to deal with the dispute with the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution is monitoring the AfD as a suspected case of right-wing extremism.
Alexander Jungbluth from Rhineland-Palatinate replaces Harald Weyel, who did not stand for re-election, as deputy treasurer. Also new to the Federal Board are the assessors Dirk Brandes from Lower Saxony and Heiko Scholzwho is a member of the Hessian State Parliament.
The Federal Chairman of the Young Alternative (JA), Hannes GnauckThe current report by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution states the following about the AfD’s youth organization: “The ideology of the AfD is determined by an ethnically and culturally influenced concept of the people, which contradicts the understanding of the people in the Basic Law.”
Until a few weeks ago, Maximilian Krah was a member of the AfD executive board. However, he resigned from the leadership shortly before the European elections. The reason for this was controversial statements by Krah and a dispute with the French right-wing party Rassemblement National. He had previously come under pressure because of possible contacts with Russia and China. One of Krah’s employees was arrested on suspicion of espionage on behalf of China.
