Leica has just launched a new application for iPhone, allowing you to exploit its color profiles with your device’s lens. Small downside, you have to put your hand in your pocket to take full advantage of the software.
Leica is renowned for its optical quality and its heritage in the world of photography. Its lenses like the Summilux and the Noctilux are popular. With the Leica LUX app, the company wants to bring the experience of its products directly to Apple smartphones. But the strategy it adopted risks displeasing many users…
You have to put your hand in your pocket to fully enjoy it…
Indeed, if you download Leica LUX from the App Store, you will notice that as soon as you open the application, you are offered to upgrade to a subscription system called LUX PRO. The annual subscription is $79.99. The monthly one is set at $7.99 per month.
The application presents itself as a camera offering 11 color profiles, called Leica Looks, inspired by current Leica cameras and classic films. It also offers a “ Aperture » which simulates the style and bokeh of expensive Leica lenses. “ Leica LUX ensures that every photo reflects the reliability and authenticity that Leica is known for », Promises the company.
If the menus are intuitive and the controls customizable, the free version drastically limits the use of the interface: only 5 color profiles and a lens simulation are offered.
First mixed reviews
This initiative is not Leica’s first attempt to monetize its image. Recently, the brand placed features of its Leica Fotos application behind a paywall, before backing down in the face of numerous criticisms from photographers.
Concerning Leica LUX, the first opinions also seem mixed on the App Store, with many regretting the obligation to go through a subscription to access all the functions of the application. Same story in terms of quality, the first tests revealing mixed results. Lens simulations in portrait mode, for example, are uneven, sometimes with pixelated elements.
If the experience should still please photography enthusiasts, and in particular Leica cameras, it is not certain that it will be a hit with less experienced users. To make up your own mind, simply go to the App Store and download the app, which has only been available for a few days.

- Almost as light as the iPhone 15
- Hyper bright screen
- The most efficient iPhone
This year, the iPhone 15 Pro necessarily suffers from the comparison with the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The reason ? A telephoto lens that stands still, where its big brother benefits from Apple’s very first periscope.
The iPhone 15 Pro nonetheless remains an excellent smartphone, which is also more affordable than last year’s model. Rarely light for a phone of this standing, its titanium shell gives it a stunning look and impeccable grip. Be careful, however: the iPhone 15 Pro tends to heat up, especially in games where the A17 Pro chip is heavily used.
Either way, you probably want to avoid playing for too long. Because if the iPhone 15 Pro is almost close to the iPhone 15 on the scale, it also borrows its… light autonomy from its little brother. If you’re the type to spend more than 3 to 4 hours in front of your smartphone, you might feel a little cramped with the iPhone 15 Pro.
