New Mercedes E-Class: focus on electrification and on-board technologies

Iconic sedan from the Stuttgart manufacturer, the new Mercedes E-Class will be unveiled on April 25, 2023, and it is full of technologies.

Mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid

In terms of engines first, all versions – petrol and diesel, four and six cylinders – will be electrified. The existing M254 four-cylinder petrol and OM654 four-cylinder diesel power units will be offered exclusively with a starter-alternator, generator, 48 V electrical system, as well as an exhaust system allowing them to meet future regulations on Euro 7 emissions.

The turbocharged M256 2.9-litre straight-six petrol and OM656 3.0-litre straight-six diesel units will receive 48V mild hybridization, but also a plug-in hybrid version with powers ranging from 330 to 435 hp. Above all, they will be equipped with a 28.6 kWh battery allowing them to travel more than 100 km in all-electric mode.

The chassis will receive a double wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear. It will be accompanied by an optional piloted suspension and, for the first time on an E-Class, a four-wheel steering system offering up to 10° of steering at the rear.

Full of embedded technologies

The passenger compartment will be directly inherited from the electric cousin EQE and will be able to receive the optional Hyperscreen with three screens: one for the driver, one central and one for the passenger, all under glass. The multimedia system interface should run under the in-house MBUX OS and incorporate the manufacturer’s latest developments. Thus, it will for example be possible for the passenger to watch a film while the vehicle is moving; a sensor will monitor the driver’s attention and deactivate the passenger screen if the person behind the wheel is distracted by it.

The latest version of MBUX also includes artificial intelligence that studies driver habits and anticipates their needs, for example by automatically heating the seat when the temperature drops, or lowering the window when entering a busy car park. In addition, a new feature makes its appearance through a camera, optional, which films the driver’s face and which, when the vehicle is stationary, can be used on various third-party applications downloadable on the MBUX operating system. , including TikTok and Zoom.

We don’t yet have a release date or price information, but falling between the C-Class and the S-Class, this E-Class sedan should start at around €68,000.
