The completely new form of contraception is currently being tested at the Georgia Institute of Technology. In contraceptive jewelry, a carrier layer of contraceptive hormones is applied to watches, rings and earrings.
Similar to the contraceptive patch, the hormones are absorbed through the skin to prevent pregnancy. Does that really work?
The hormonally effective jewelry is still in the test phase
So far, the contraceptive jewelry has been tested on pigs and rats. In the Journal of Controlled Release , the researchers published the results of the first tests of hormonal jewelry. The animals could actually be supplied with a sufficient amount of hormones. However, clinical tests on humans have not yet been performed.
The animals wore the hormone jewelery for 16 hours each time – similar to people who wear rings, watches and earrings during the day, but put them to sleep at night for about 8 hours. ” The more contraceptive options available, the more likely it is that individual women’s needs can be met, ” said Mark Prausnitz of the Georgia Institute of Technology.
