A new patent from Microsoft could add a great feature to the Xbox Series S – finally solving the biggest compatibility problem gamers have with the all-digital console without a disc drive.
A new Microsoft patent could significantly improve game compatibility on Xbox consoles and a new feature for your digital game libraries Add. The patent describes the function of creating a digital copy of a game that you own on disc. This would be particularly useful for gamers with an Xbox Series S, since it doesn’t have a disc drive after all.
Xbox Series S: Play discs without a drive
The patent describes a process by which you Add a physical copy of the game to your digital library could. Unfortunately, it is not yet known which end devices you could use to scan the disc into your library. Also, the patent doesn’t say whether the disc would still be usable after the copy, and whether it would be a perpetual or time-limited license that you would need to update periodically.
While the feature could be pretty useful for many Xbox owners, it’s not yet clear if Microsoft ever implement it will. Registering a patent alone does not mean that a project will be realised.
Microsoft: glitch shows problem with digital games
Only recently did one extensive network dropout denied many gamers access to their digital Xbox library. The incident has shown once again that purely digital games are associated with risks for gamers. A combination of disc version and digital copy could therefore be an attractive alternative for many players.
