New on Disney +: Kerry Washington surprises everyone with a comedy that is already talking about her in the United States

Disney+ puts Unprisoned online this Friday, March 10, a comedy worn by Kerry Washington.

What is it about ?

A single mother, perfectionist and life coach finds her life turned upside down when her father, an ex-drug dealer, is released from prison after 17 years in prison and moves into her guest room.

“Prison card without going through square one”

Disney+ added this Friday March 10 to its Unprisoned catalog, a Hulu series available in France under the STAR banner. This comedy in 8 episodes of 30 minutes is therefore aimed at a rather adult audience. Fans of the Scandal series – also available on the platform – will be delighted to find Kerry Washington on their screen.

The actress had accustomed us to serious roles in recent years on the side of the small skylight. She recently lent her features to a single, bohemian mother who settles with her daughter in a wealthy suburb in Little Fires Everywhere. The former interpreter of Olivia Pope slips again into the role of a separated mother in Unprisoned, but do not expect any drama at all.

The new Disney+ series is closer to dramatic comedy, with its 30-minute format, sometimes light lines and situation comedy. We had never seen Washington headlining such a program. If she sometimes borders on overplaying, it is clear that the young woman took real pleasure in playing in the series.

Unprisoned is inspired by the true story of its creator, Tracy McMillan, who drew all her traumas to write the lines. The series gives us some funny and awkward moments that she had to live (not always useful for the action like this full frontal scene of Brenda Strong), like when the heroine comes across her father (Delroy Lindo) and her former stepmother having fun. It also talks about identity, recognition and forgiveness. Kerry Washington, who plays a psychiatrist/influencer specializing in family affairs, delivers a little lesson in therapy to her subscribers in each episode.

On the other side of the Atlantic, critics hail Tracy McMillan’s writing, which depicts this father-daughter relationship with gentleness, honesty and a lot of heart, while having the black condition in the United States as a background. How can an ex-con get back on his feet when society prevents him from doing so? It is through this subject that the series hits the mark.
