New on Netflix: a terrifying series about the Fukushima nuclear accident reminiscent of Chernobyl

Available on Netflix, the series “The Days” retraces the seven days following the terrible nuclear disaster that occurred in Fukushima, Japan, in March 2011.

On March 11, 2011, a violent earthquake of magnitude 9.1 – a record – caused a tsunami on the Pacific coast of Tohoku, in northeastern Japan. The wave, more than 30 meters high, invaded the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The tragedy, considered the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl, which occurred in 1986, caused the death and disappearance of 22,500 people.

This event, which strongly marked the history of Japan and that of the whole world, is meticulously told in The Days, offered on the Netflix platform.

Composed of eight episodes, the program focuses on the seven days that followed March 11, 2011, between disaster series and political thriller. Breathtaking and distressing, the fiction follows the accident through different points of view, those of the employees of the plant, the scientists or even the politicians.

The Days looks at the different stages of the event, from the tsunami to the nuclear accident and also addresses the environmental consequences – water and food were contaminated. Even if the series is quite talkative – and sometimes very technical -, it becomes particularly interesting when it deals with crisis management.

The Fukushima catastrophe is not only the work of a natural disaster. After this event, numerous investigations revealed the errors made by the plant, accused of not having reacted quickly enough in the hours following the earthquake. The government of the country is also singled out.

This human drama is reminiscent of the excellent HBO mini-series, Chernobyl, which won four Emmys – including Best Limited Series. At the controls of The Days, we find, among others, a well-known Japanese director: Hideo Nakata, author of the classics Ring and Dark Water.

The Days is available on Netflix.
