In the new Netflix comedy “Blockbuster”, the rental video store chain of the same name has already disappeared from the US market. Only one last branch of the once ubiquitous brand is still resisting the inevitable. And this last bastion is occupied by every video store cliche: from the wannabe Tarantino to the store manager who’s been there since eighth grade.
From November 3, 2022, the entire first season of “Blockbuster” will be online on Netflix – and that’s not without a certain irony: After all, Netflix itself swept the blockbuster empire with its mail order rental model and later the now well-established online streaming from the market.
The local video store was a cave of wonders for generations in its day and a window on the world and cultural refreshment for many before the days of the internet. So for anyone who’s ever rewound a VHS tape, Blockbuster will bring some warm memories – and a fun history lesson for those who know CRT screens only from the Technik Museum.
