Since the release of Get Out – Oscar for best original screenplay in 2018 – the world of horror seems to be going at the pace of Jordan Peele. In just three films, the American filmmaker has imposed a real style that continues to inspire young directors. This is the case of Nathaniel Martello-White, author of The Strays – also titled In Their Shadow in French.
The first thirty minutes even look like a pale copy of the model with similar staging and codes. We have to wait for the second part so that Nathaniel Martello-White takes his own path. From then on, the film gained real interest.

Without revealing the surprises of the plot, The Strays opposes the bourgeoisie to the underprivileged circles with, at the heart, a family history and many secrets. The screenwriter and director, whose first feature film this is, wanted to explore the lives of black people through a British and not an American point of view.
In a meeting granted to Irish News, Nathaniel Martello-White admits to having been inspired by Jordan Peele, but above all by his personal experience. He reveals in particular that he wanted to transcribe this feeling of feeling different in an environment where everyone is alike.
