With the Philips Screeneo U4, a short-throw projector is coming onto the market, which should be tempting for PS5 and Xbox gamers with HDMI 2.1 and VRR – and can be pre-ordered at just half the price.

With the Screeneo U4, Philips is launching a new generation of its short-throw projector after the manufacturer successfully co-financed the project via a crowdfunding call. A somewhat unusual way – however, the lively participation on the part of the projector fans probably proves the group right.
Philips develops new projector with crowdfunding help
According to the manufacturer, the Screeneo U4 project had already reached its donation goal of 30,000 euros within 10 minutes via the crowdfunding campaign on the Indiegogo platform – and is now almost 2 million euros in crowdfunding contributions. The campaign runs until July 15th.
Until then, it should probably still be possible to pre-order the Screeneo U4 from Philips at a crowdfunding price of 600 euros. A future RRP of 1,199 euros for the official market entry of the projector is announced on the campaign page – so you save 50 percent when pre-ordering.
The Philips Screeneo U4 beats Samsung’s “The Freestyle”
If the new short-throw projector from Philips keeps what it promises, Samsung can wrap up with its “The Freestyle” – at least as far as the favor of the gaming community is concerned:
With its HDMI 2.1 interfaces and VRR, the Philips short-throw projector is also equipped for PS5 and Xbox battles – at least fundamentally. With an input limit of 60 FPS, the device does not come close to current TV models, which offer a refresh rate that is twice as high at 120 FPS.
No UHD quality, but more sound
Relatively similar to the portable “The Freestyle” from Samsung, which is currently available in stores for around 750 euros at an RRP of around 1,000 euros, the Philips projector cannot serve with UHD image quality despite HDR10: Both projectors only manage 1080p FullHD. However, that could change as soon as Samsung relaunches the new Freestyle generation with 4K image quality.
With two 15 watt speakers, however, the Screeneo U4 is still superior to the Samsung projector in terms of sound. A 3.5mm AUX socket also allows you to connect additional devices, as does the dual Bluetooth 5.0 interface and the USB port, which also provides 5V power for HDMI-connected Fire TV sticks and Roku players.
