New platform – now donate excess electricity to those in need

Saving energy is popular in many Austrian households. Because the high electricity prices drive many people into poverty. Quite a few are dependent on help. These are now also available via electricity donation.

In the wake of the energy crisis, many Austrians installed a photovoltaic system. This reduces costs noticeably and you may be able to earn a few extra euros. But the purchase is expensive, and financially less well-off families rarely get to enjoy it. If the Austrian Energy Community platform has its way, they should also benefit from the energy transition.Project presented in ViennaInitiator Matthias Nadrag has now presented the project in Vienna with experts: “While the top ten percent have been using photovoltaics, electric cars and storage for a long time If we can afford independence, we take care of the bottom three percent.” Specifically, it works like this: Since 2021, it has been possible in Austria to distribute energy without being an “energy trader”. Solar power not needed by the producer could be shared regionally with neighbors. That’s been history since the beginning of October. Anyone can donate electricityThe Austrian Energy Community represents not only a social but also a technical innovation, as citizen energy communities across several grid areas have only been possible since October 2, 2023. In the first few days of October alone, hundreds of kilowatt hours were distributed between Vienna, Burgenland and Carinthia. For example, the “Regiowert” group of companies uses the surplus from two photovoltaic systems in Burgenland to provide enough energy to provide hot meals every day at the Westbahnhof opening in Villach to be able to prepare food for around 30 socially disadvantaged people. Excess energy from private and commercial generation plants becomes direct aid for needy families and aid organizations. All information here.
