  • For cyclists, turning is one of the most common causes of accidents on the road.
  • Until now, cyclists could only signal their turn with a hand signal.
  • A new regulation will allow indicators to be attached to all types of bicycles in the future.

The increasing number of accidents involving bicycles is worrying and has therefore prompted the federal government to rethink. According to information from the Rheinische Post, a new regulation in the road traffic regulations will allow the attachment of indicators to all types of bicycles in the future. Until now, this was only reserved for certain special bicycles, such as rickshaws.

Cyclists turning is one of the most common accident scenarios. Until now, cyclists had to use a hand signal to communicate when turning. This not only impairs driving stability, but also significantly restricts braking in an emergency.

Bicycle indicators: Turning without hand signals is safer

In addition to the advantage that cyclists no longer have to signal when turning and both hands are available to brake in an emergency, a turn signal is easier to recognize, especially when the field of vision is limited, such as in the dark.

The planned new regulation of the road traffic regulations would also allow the use of indicators that are not attached directly to the bicycle, but, for example, to clothing or helmets – like this invention from Austria.
