Registering or re-registering cars is becoming easier in Germany. We’ll tell you what has changed from September 1, 2023.

- A new regulation on new vehicle registration came into force on September 1, 2023.
- Vehicle registration is becoming digital and can be processed online.
- Drivers no longer have to wait for vehicle documents to be sent and can drive for up to ten days without them.
There is good news for the drivers among you. An ordinance re-issuing the vehicle registration ordinance was issued by Dr. Volker Wissing, the Federal Minister for Digital Affairs and Transport, and came into force on September 1, 2023 following the approval of the Federal Council.
From now on you can register, re-register or de-register your vehicle online – even in real time. You no longer have to wait for the official sticker and documents to be sent.
Drive for up to ten days without a sticker
It is sufficient if the license plates are attached to the vehicle, a printout of the digital registration certificate is carried and the temporary proof of registration is clearly visible in the vehicle, according to a press release from the Ministry of Transport.
You can drive like this for up to ten days, then the official documents must be available and the sticker must be attached.
