Deforestation in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest in the first two months of the year was at its lowest level since 2018, according to a report.
In January and February, 196 square kilometers of the Amazon were deforested.
That is 63 percent less than in the same period last year, said the environmental protection group Imazon.
In the first two months of last year, 523 square kilometers of rainforest were destroyed, and in 2022 even 564 square kilometers. The area deforested in the first two months is still equivalent to almost 327 football fields per day, Imazon wrote. “The data shows that we still face a major challenge,” said researcher Larissa Amorim.
The government of current Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva came into office with a promise to combat deforestation. Under Lula’s ultra-right predecessor Jair Bolsonaro, deforestation had increased by 75 percent compared to the average for the previous decade.
