New rocket attack from Gaza – Israel attacks Hamas targets

(dpa)

For the first time in almost two months, militant Palestinians in the Gaza Strip fired another rocket at Israel on Saturday night. According to military reports, the Israeli air force then attacked Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip. A weapons workshop and three Hamas military posts were attacked, the army said. The warning sirens had previously wailed in the Israeli coastal city of Ashkelon. Accordingly, the projectile was intercepted by the missile defense system. There was no information on possible casualties on either side.

In the border area to the Gaza Strip, things have been mostly quiet for the past two months. In the occupied West Bank, however, Israeli military operations repeatedly lead to clashes after a wave of terror in Israel. Three Palestinians were killed in clashes with the Israeli army in the northern West Bank on Friday.

Around two million people live in the Gaza Strip under very poor conditions. Hamas seized power by force in 2007. Israel then tightened a blockade of the coastal area, which is supported by Egypt. Both countries justify the measure with security interests. Israel, the EU and the US classify Hamas as a terrorist organization.
