  • Almost 34,600 people left the Catholic Church in Switzerland last year.
  • The previous record value from 2021 was once again exceeded by more than 300 exits.
  • Last year, 30,393 people left the Evangelical Reformed Church.

At the end of 2022, membership in Switzerland was around 2.89 million members, according to the Swiss Pastoral Sociological Institute (SPI). “SonntagsBlick” first reported about it.

The SPI expects that the number of people leaving the company will continue to rise this year. The institute cites the report on the history of sexual abuse by the Roman Catholic Church in Switzerland as the reason. “In the past few weeks and months, the Catholic Church has lost reputation and trust,” writes the SPI. Systematic cover-up, protection of the perpetrators from the victims and further accusations are in the offing. “That costs credibility.”

The cantons of Basel-Stadt, Aargau and Solothurn recorded the most departures in 2022. In contrast to the exits, according to the SPI, entries have been at a low level for years. In 2022, 1,080 people entered the Catholic Church.

Also many resignations from the Evangelical Reformed

According to the survey, the Catholic Church is not alone with the high number of resignations. 30,393 people left the Evangelical Reformed Church last year. That is more than in 2021, when 28,540 resignations were registered. The number of members of the Evangelical Reformed Church in Switzerland was around 1.92 million at the end of 2022. The SPI’s church statistics are based on the one hand on its own surveys in the parishes and on the other hand on data from third parties, namely the Federal Statistical Office (BFS).
