The goblin with the red hair flickers across the screen again: With “New Stories from Pumuckl”. RTL is launching 13 new episodes of the cult series. Three episodes of the new edition can be seen as a preview in many cinemas in German-speaking countries from this Thursday, October 26th. RTL+ users can look forward to it in December.

The new episodes of 25 minutes each will be available from December 11th on RTL+ can be accessed and can be seen “a little later” on RTL, as the broadcaster has announced. From December 11th, the documentary “From the Life of a Goblin” and new radio plays for the series will also be available on RTL+. For the documentary, the series creators were accompanied over three years to show how they resurrected the old Pumuckl cosmos.

New Pumuckl with AI

Ellis Kauts (1920-2015) Pumuckl is played in the new series by Maxi Schafroth (born 1985). The Bavarian cabaret artist’s movements provide the template for the goblin’s animation. Schafroth also lends his voice to the character. But this is converted into Hans Clarins (1929-2005) characteristic way of speaking using artificial intelligence. According to RTL, this is the world’s most extensive application of this process to date.

From 1982 to 1988, Hans Clarin voiced the goblin in “Master Eder and his Pumuckl”. At his side, Gustl Bayrhammer (1922-1993) embodied the master carpenter. On RTL+, viewers have the choice between two voices. One is the version with Maxi Schafroth, the other is the AI-based version by Hans Clarin. Hans Clarin can be heard in the cinema. The 13 episodes were directed by Marcus H. Rosenmüller (50, “Whoever dies earlier is dead longer”) and filming took place in Munich and the surrounding area until summer 2022.

What is the series about?

Master Eder’s nephew Florian, played by Florian Brückner (born 1984), and sister Bärbel (Ina Meling, 42) have inherited their uncle’s old carpenter’s workshop. This has been empty for a long time and is now to be sold. But a fateful encounter changes everything: Pumuckl gets stuck to the glue pot again, becomes visible to Florian and, as the rule goes, now has to stay with Master Eder’s nephew. Florian quits his job, moves into the workshop and renovates it. The Pumuckl is quickly back in his element and plays all sorts of practical jokes.

Other cast members announced include Milan Peschel (55), Frederic Linkemann (born 1981), Ilse Neubauer (81), Katharina Thalbach (69) and Teresa Rizos (37).
