  • Samsung and Google previously offered two competing protocols for file exchange: Quick Share and Nearby Share.
  • At CES 2024, both companies announced that they would be combining their services under the name “Quick Share”.
  • This unification is now starting and can be recognized by a new logo on Samsung and Google phones.

Anyone who wants to share an image or a link from their Samsung cell phone or Google Pixel smartphone will now notice a new symbol in the recipient menu. This is a blue circle in which two white arrows can be seen that converge in a circle towards each other. Behind this is a well-known function: Samsung Quick Share. This is a protocol for wireless file sharing with other devices in your area.

However, until now the Quick Share logo looked different. It was a purple circle with a white arrow surrounded by two lines with two dots at the end. There is a reason for the introduction of the new logo. At CES 2024, Samsung and Google announced that they are merging their previously competing file transfer solutions Quick Share and Nearby Share under the “Quick Share” brand.

In the future, file exchange from Samsung cell phones should also be possible with Android devices (from Android 6.0) from other manufacturers, Chromebooks (from ChromeOS 91) and even Windows PCs (from Windows 10). However, an app must be installed on these. They must also meet certain hardware requirements.

To exchange files, all you have to do is press the Quick Share logo and you will see other Quick Share-capable devices in your area with which you can exchange the files. Of course, you also have the option to hide your device from others.

The new logo is now available on Samsung cell phones. The prerequisite for this is an update of the Quick Share, Quick Share Agent and Quick Share Connectivity apps via the Samsung App Store. The symbol will also be visible on the first Google Pixel devices, reports 9to5Google. What’s confusing is that the “Nearby Share” option is still available in the share menu on Samsung devices after the update, but this entry is soon to be removed by Google via an update.

There are currently two Quick Share apps for Windows PCs, one from Google and one from Samsung. They are also expected to be merged later this year.

The blue circle with two arrows isn’t the only new symbol coming to Galaxy phones these days. In the next few weeks you will also see a star button on many devices. We’ll also tell you what’s behind it in the linked article.
