Since mid-December, several Internet users have observed changes when they use the navigation mode of Google Maps. The same goes for those who use it on Android Auto.
It is the specialized media 9to5Google who initially noticed this novelty. On some iOS and Android devices, buildings are displayed in 3D during navigation mode. Until now, this functionality, deployed on the geolocation application in 2012, could only be activated through user action. It is particularly useful for easily finding a place, especially when you are in a new city.
3D in navigation mode seems to be rolled out gradually
Certain conditions must be met for navigation mode to display buildings in 3D, notes the media. The 3D view must be activated before navigation begins, while the zoom must also have been engaged.
In addition to the mobile app, some drivers using Android Auto have also reported on Reddit that this immersive view is now available in Google’s automotive operating system. One user explains that the feature appeared even though he had not changed any settings, which suggests that it is a change at the server level.
In the screenshot shared by the user, in which navigation mode is not activated, buildings appear translucent, while the path taken is highlighted. The functionality is obviously in testing at the moment. Moreover, Google had already mentioned it in October, when announcing many new features coming to its platform.
