Thunderbird is blowing its winter plumage with a major new update, dubbed Supernova. Mozilla, however, is playing it safe with a two-step deployment.

Numbered 115, this version is intended to be ” the beginning of a new era for Thunderbird. »

Mozilla aims for the stars with Thunderbird 115 “Supernova”

Teased for months, the new major version of Thunderbird is finally here. Numbered 115 and called Supernova, it is currently only available for manual download. Impossible indeed to directly update the Mozilla messaging software from its menus, because the developers want to make sure that everything is OK before opening the floodgates. Subsequently, however, it will be possible to automatically switch from version 102 (or previous) to version 115, which for the moment will coexist.

On our side, we carried out this manual update, and no bug seems to be noted. Accounts and settings have been correctly transferred, while some extensions are not (yet?) compatible.

What’s new at Thunderbird?

In addition to a brand new logo, Thunderbird 115 reviews the interface of the venerable software. Its central three-column display changes very little at first glance, while nevertheless being more modern and better organized.

A unified and dynamic toolbar at the top, a revised design for the calendar and the address book, or even improvements for the folder and tag systems or certain menus are to be noted. The Application menu at the top right notably offers a new system to change the display density of the entire application in one click. Accessibility has also been improved, with new keyboard shortcuts and reading options.

Subsequently, this new version will unsurprisingly receive other improvements, including Thunderbird Sync, which should be very useful when the Android version is released.
