Drank one glass too many and we usually have a nasty hangover the next day. A special remedy is making the rounds on social media and is said to be a real insider tip against headaches, nausea and the like. what’s the hype about?

New Year’s Eve is predestined to end the year with a few good drinks. Unfortunately, we often get the receipt for the fun-filled evening on New Year’s Day: if it was one glass of wine or champagne too many, the hangover knocks at the door – with headache, nausea and tiredness included.

But how can we make the day a little easier after a night of drinking? Do grandma’s tips like Rollmops help against a hangover? The classic headache pill? Or do we just have to endure the discomfort? An alleged hangover tip is currently doing the rounds on social media: the drug Elotrans. This is actually intended against diarrhea, but should also drive away hangover symptoms. Is that correct?

Elotrans against headaches and Co: Does the diarrhea drug also help against hangovers?

Especially on Instagram, influencers post enthusiastically about their experiences with Elotrans – and not against diarrhea, but as a miracle cure for the aftermath of a few too many glasses. At times the hype went so far that Elotrans was hardly available in pharmacies. The manufacturer, the pharmaceutical company Stada, has even set up its own Instagram account for its product, where it posts memes and pictures about Elotrans and its possible uses – including as an anti-hangover remedy.

If we now want to know whether Elotrans can actually help against nausea, headaches and the like after a night of partying, we have to look at how exactly it works. According to the manufacturer, the drug is supposed to compensate for the loss of water and electrolytes with salts, glucose and minerals. Mix up a solution of the powder and drink it. Instead of just against acute diarrhea, Elotrans is supposed to be taken after drinking – before going to bed, so that the hangover is immediately milder the next morning.

But can this work? Heiner Wedemeyer from the German Society for Gastroenterology, Digestive and Metabolic Diseases (DGVS) explains to the German Press Agency that consuming (too much) alcohol can actually have a negative effect on our electrolyte balance. In this case, a remedy like Elotrans can actually help. However, the expert classifies directly: “But the effects will not be great.”

Top Hangover Tips: This really helps if you’ve had a glass too many

In the event of a nasty hangover, for example after a lavish New Year’s Eve, Wedemeyer recommends “the good old home remedies”. Ultimately, these are equivalent to a drug like Elotrans. After drinking, he advises: “Drink enough, add carbohydrates, if necessary take a headache tablet, for example aspirin, eat salty food.”

In this case, however, it is better to be safe than sorry, because the best cure for a hangover is and remains not to overdo it in the first place. That means: Enjoy alcohol in moderation, don’t mix too many different things and drink enough water with every drink. So the party night can come!
