The lockdown throws a spanner in the works of a big New Year's party. But you can also celebrate at home with these eleven songs.

The farewell to the old year and the start of 2021 will be different this time than usual. Germany is in lockdown, big parties are not allowed to be celebrated. If you still want to make the most of New Year's Eve, you can bring some mood into the evening with these eleven songs.

Sarah Brightman – "Time to Say Goodbye"

A farewell song for the past year should definitely not be missing on the New Year's Eve playlist. Many people will not mourn the year 2020, which was overshadowed by the Corona crisis. Nevertheless, it is worth taking stock and saying "goodbye" to the old year.

Peter Fox – "Everything new"

In the new year "everything will be new" – the hope after the Corona-shattered year is high. And that's exactly what the song by Peter Fox (49) conveys: a new departure packed in music. "The world is covered with dust, but I want to see where it's going. Climb the mountain of dirt because there is a fresh wind blowing up there," it says in the lyrics.

Europe – "The Final Countdown"

Another classic for the playlist. The hit "The Final Countdown" from the 1980s can be heard from the loudspeakers of many on New Year's Eve to count down the last ten seconds until the New Year.

U2 – "New Year's Day"

The song of the rock band U2 couldn't be more fitting on New Year's Eve in lockdown: You long for your loved ones, with whom you would normally celebrate the New Year. The song was inspired in the 1980s by the Polish trade union "Solidarnosc" (Eng. "Solidarity"), which was decisive for the political change in 1989.

The Red Roses – "Auld Lang Syne"

"Auld Lang Syne" is a classic from Scotland for the New Year in English-speaking countries. In Germany the song is known as "Say goodbye, brothers". Die Toten Hosen released a rocking version of the song in 1998 under their pseudonym Die Roten Rosen.

Eagles – "Funky New Year"

The Eagles hit is about the hangover the next morning after New Year's Eve. Nevertheless, the song creates a good atmosphere and should not be missing in the soundtrack for the start of the new year. After all, there will only be one party in 2021.

Jamie Cullum – "Next Year Baby"

If you still have no idea what resolutions to keep in the new year, Jamie Cullum (41) gives some examples in "Next Year Baby": drink less beer, read more books and spend less money on shoes. "Will I keep even one of these things?" Asks Cullum and answers directly: "Probably not."

Oasis – "Don't Look Back In Anger"

The title of the Oasis song also fits 2020. If the year wasn't going well, you should take the advice not to look back in anger to heart. What Noel Gallagher (53) actually meant with his lyrics, he doesn't know anymore. In an interview with "WENN" he once said that he was so high on songwriting that he had absolutely no idea what the song was about.

Katy Perry – "Firework"

If you can't ignite your fireworks yourself, you just have to bring it home musically. The sale of rockets and firecrackers is prohibited in 2020. If you still want to let it pop, simply turn up the speakers on "Firework" by Katy Perry (36).

ABBA – "Happy New Year"

This song is also a classic every New Year's Eve – and the lyrics are more up-to-date than ever: "May we all have a vision from time to time of a world in which every neighbor is a friend. Happy New Year", sings Agnetha Fältskog (70) by ABBA.

Frank Sinatra – "New York, New York"

"New York, New York" may not seem like a start into the year at first glance, but in the USA the hit by Frank Sinatra (1915-1998) is a real classic on New Year's Eve. The title traditionally belongs to the New Year's Eve ceremony of the so-called "Ball Drop" in Times Square in New York, where a time ball is dropped on the roof of the One Times Square skyscraper 60 seconds before the turn of the year.
