Known as Newport Beach to us, it only took The OC four seasons to mark an entire generation of teenagers around the world and thus earn its place in the Pantheon of the most cult teen dramas.
It all starts with the arrival of the brilliant but troubled Ryan Atwood (Ben McKenzie) in the life of the wealthy inhabitants of Newport Beach, in Orange County, California. The big-hearted adolescent delinquent is in fact taken in by the Cohens – the family of his court-appointed lawyer – and must now find his place in this new setting which contrasts radically with the poor neighborhood in which he grew up.
Between a crush on the girl next door (Mischa Barton) and setbacks in the halls of high school, Ryan can however count on the support of his new adopted brother, the sarcastic and clumsy Seth Cohen (Adam Brody), in love since childhood of the popular Summer (Rachel Bilson).
When Fox commissioned the pilot of the series from Josh Schwartz – thus making him the youngest creator of a drama series in the history of American television at 26 – the channel then saw in The OC only a short program of ‘summer. But faced with its rapid success, it finally decides to extend it and give it a special place in its autumn schedule – and in our hearts.
