It’s not the best-known film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, but everything indicates that his remake is moving forward.

Television rules the nation

Arnold Schwarzenegger is the hero of many cult films. Predator, Commando, Terminator… At one time, the actor was the reference in action cinema, alongside of course Sylvester Stallone. Not so long ago, we told you about the excellent Last Action Hero, a feature film full of humor which unfortunately did not meet its audience at the time of its release. There’s another film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger that has been largely forgotten and is currently being remade: The Running Man.

Released in 1987 to a certain indifference, The Running Man grossed $38 million for an estimated budget of $27 million.. Set in a futuristic dystopia, it tells the story of Ben Richards (played by Arnold Schwarzenegger), a former police officer convicted of a crime he did not commit and who is forced to fight for his survival in a game violent television. In this loose adaptation of the eponymous novel written by Stephen King, the story exposes how television pushes people to kill each other for ratings.

Wrongly convicted

In this satire of a country, the United States, which has become a totalitarian police state where game shows show convicts fighting for their lives, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s mission is to eliminate all the killers sent after him. He also knows that all this madness will only end with revenge on Damon Killian, the crooked host of the show. Since 2021, we know that director Edgar Wright (Scott Pilgrim vs the World) is working on a new adaptation of Stephen King’s work, and therefore on a remake of The Running Man.

What we know today is that the project is still on track according to producer Simon Kinberg, who recently declared that the filmmaker was still working on the film. The screenplay is written by Michael Bacall, and the actor who will take Schwarzenegger’s place will be Glen Powell (Top Gun Maverick). If Paramount continues to show interest in this creation, filming could begin as early as next year. If you want to refresh your memory, The Running Man is available on VOD on Amazon Prime.
