A real favorite of the press and the public in 2023, this French fantasy film has a strong chance of being crowned with success at the next Césars ceremony after a record number of nominations.

A fantastic film in the spotlight

In a little less than a month the next Césars ceremony will be held, an event which will reward the great French films of 2023. And this year, one film stands out from its peers: This is The Animal Kingdom, the second feature film by Thomas Cailley. A touching fantasy film, led by Romain Duris, Paul Kircher and Adèle Exarchopoulos, which caused a sensation when it was released in theaters last October.

A real favorite among spectators last year, The Animal Kingdom is the big winner of this first selection with 12 nominations: Best Film, Best Direction, Best Actor for Romain Duris, Best Male Revelation for Paul Kircher, Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Music, Best Sound, Best Photo, Best Editing, Best Costumes, Best Sets and finally Best Visual Effects.

The reign of gender

The celebration of this fantastic feature film also demonstrates the advent of the genre in France, which has a string of exceptional years. We particularly remember the 2021 Palme d’Or awarded to Julia Ducournau for her masterpiece, Titanium. In 2023, several genre feature films have met with some success, such as Vincent Must Die, Mars Express, The Three Musketeers, or even Vermin, released more recently. A refreshing trend which also partly explains the good health of French cinemas while the CNC recorded a significant increase in entries in 2023.
