Sometimes, some films go unnoticed despite undeniable qualities. This is the case of this science fiction thriller directed by a Swiss filmmakerreleased several years ago.

Underwater Earthlings

The colonyor Tides in the original version, directed by Tim Fehlbaumis a German-Swiss science fiction thriller which arrived in cinemas in 2021. Starring Nora Arnezeder, Iain Glen, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina and Joel Basman, the film offers a captivating post-apocalyptic vision of our planet, devastated by natural elements. The story takes place in a future where Earth’s elites have fled to a space colony on Kepler-209, leaving behind a devastated world and above all flooded by gigantic tides. A team from the Colony is sent to Earth to assess its viability with a view to possible recolonization.

A very careful creation

The film, although receiving mixed reviews, impressed many with its cinematic qualities and immersive atmosphere. He received several distinctions: Audience Award and Best Production Design Award at the Neufchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival, Best Direction and Best Cinematography at the Bayerischer Filmpreis, Best Music, Best Sets, Best Makeup and Best Visual Effects at the Deutscher Filmpreis. Despite some pacing flaws and some awkward flashbacks, Tim Fehlbaum’s production offers striking landscapes and atmospheric staging. There Nora Arnezeder’s performance as Blakethe courageous and determined astronaut, is particularly commendable, bringing a real emotion to this science fiction thriller.

Minimalism in the service of an oppressive staging

One of the most striking aspects of La Colonie is its minimal use of digital effects, favoring practical effects to create an authentic and palpable world. Tim Fehlbaum, reluctant to overuse the green screen, insisted that natural elements such as water and mist are captured in the most authentic way on screen, which adds to the viewer’s immersion in this Land submerged under water. The natural settings filmed in Germany and Switzerland add a dimension of realism, while the soundtrack helps reinforce the oppressive atmosphere of the film. Moreover, at the time of its release, if the spectators greeted above all the originality of the plot and the quality of the actors’ performancescritics pointed out the visual and narrative audacity of the director Swiss. A science fiction film different from what we are used to seeing, which could interest fans of the genre.
