On the occasion of CES 2024, Kenichiro Yoshida, CEO of Sony, released a few words about the live-action Zelda film. The project was announced last November following the huge success of Mario.

Remember, last year, a few months after the release of Tears of the Kingdom and the huge success of Mario in theaters, Nintendo dropped another bomb. The official launch of the production of a live-action Zelda film (in other words, in live action – it will not be animation)! The project is produced by Shigeru Miyamoto, the immense creator of Link and his friends, as well as by a certain Avi Arad – to whom we owe the arrival of Spider-Man in the cinema under the direction of Sam Raimi, Iron Man , or even “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”. The production will be entrusted to Wes Ball (Labyrinth, Planet of the Apes New Kingdom). For now, no release date.

“I have been working on the film (…) for years”, explained Shigeru Miyamoto during the announcement, specifying that Nintendo will be “very involved”, that it will take “time” before the project sees the light of day. A few months later, it was Wes Ball’s turn to speak – via Entertainment Weekly. “This incredible fantasy and adventure film will not be like The Lord of the Rings, it will have its own breath,” says the director. I always said to myself: I would really like to see a live-action Miyazaki film. This fantasy that he brings to films is what I would like to see on screen.”

When Sony gets involved

These are the first reassuring echoes, particularly as the choice of live-action leaves some doubts. At the start of 2024, it is up to Kenichiro Yoshida, CEO of Sony, to speak on the subject. The man was at CES in Las Vegas, the famous show dedicated to new technologies.

We are excited about another license extension. The adaptation of Nintendo’s “The Legend of Zelda” video game franchise! This live-action film will tell an incredible story of adventure and discovery – Kenichiro Yoshida, CEO of Sony

However, the CEO will not say more. If you’re wondering what Sony has in there, it’s simple. Sony Pictures Entertainment, the company’s film division, is co-financing the Zelda film and will handle its worldwide distribution. A superb agreement between two video game giants.
