Culture news Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will dominate the box office in 2024: Tim Burton’s film has already reached this symbolic milestone in one weekend!
It’s the current theatrical release: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has only just come out and is a huge hit internationally.
Tim Burton is a hit with Beetlejuice
Beetlejuice is off to a flying start Beetlejuice! The sequel to Tim Burton’s cult film got off to a flying start, raking in a whopping $145.4 million in its first weekend in 70 territories. A score that largely eclipses that of the first opus, which only brought in 73.7 million dollars in total.
In North America, the success was just as resounding. With $110 million in a single week, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice rose to second place among the best September openings of all time. And it’s also the second-biggest of all time for Burton, whose feature film Alice in Wonderland opened with $116.1 million and went on to gross $1.03 billion worldwide.
A successful sequel
Driven by a family tragedy, Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) is forced back into the haunted Winter River Mansion. But the peace won’t last: her teenage daughter, Astrid (Jenna Ortega), inadvertently opens a portal to the afterlife. Far from being a mere exercise in style, this new Beetlejuice adventure is a true success. Burton rediscovers all his creativity here by relying on practical special effects, extravagant sets and careful artistic direction.. The plot, however, is effective and rhythmic. Winona Ryder, Michael Keaton and Catherine O’Hara reprise their roles with infectious energy, and are joined by a Jenna Ortega who brings a welcome freshness, a Willem Dafoe who is brilliant in the comedy field and a Monica Bellucci with a presence as captivating as it is anecdotal. The screenplay, written by Gough & Millar and Seth Grahame-Smith, is peppered with hilarious gags and subtle references. On Rotten Tomatoes, Burton’s film has a very good average of 77%, with the press agreeing on the following consensus: “Michael Keaton’s devious poltergeist still has plenty of juice left in this return to form from Tim Burton, which combines charming practical effects with macabre gags to deliver a fun and entertaining time.“
