If there is one director we are only talking about at the moment, it is George Miller, the man we know mainly for the Mad Max saga, and in particular the episode Furiosa currently in theaters, but also for the excellent animated film Happy Feet, which has absolutely nothing to do with it. The filmmaker likes to tackle very different genres, and we understand that perfectly. But did you know that he also almost brought his touch to the cinematic universe of superheroes with an ambitious project : “Justice League: Mortal”. Scheduled for release in 2009, this film was to bring together a host of iconic DC Comics heroes, including Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and Flash. The casting promised a cast still relatively unknown at the time composed of DJ Cotrona as Superman, Armie Hammer as Batman, Megan Gale as Wonder Woman and Adam Brody as Flash, who would have formed a Justice League living in another universe.
Project canceled, script leaked
The project was unfortunately abruptly canceled, notably due to financing problems, the 2007-2008 writers’ strike (when the studio felt the script needed refinement), as well as complications related to locations. filming in Australia. We can also mention strategic changes within Warner Bros. : The Dark Knight became an unexpected billion-dollar hit, and the studio ultimately decided they didn’t want two simultaneous versions of Batman, preferring to focus on developing solo superhero films and Christopher Nolan’s trilogy.
A heartbreak for many since the project was already at a very advanced stage, with a complete cast, a script almost completed and pre-production already well underway. The story was to be inspired by three existing scripts, those of Justice League of America: Tower of Babel, Superman: Sacrifice and Crisis on Infinite Earths #8, for connoisseurs. In October 2013, the script for Justice League: Mortal was even leaked online, enough to make fans salivate forever. There is nevertheless enough material for director Ryan Unicomb to begin writing a documentary a few years earlier which, if it is ever released, will aim to delve behind the scenes of the aborted project by providing previously unpublished details on its pre-production and a myriad of interviews that Miller recently seemed unwilling to take part in.
