It was one of the most anticipated anime (if not the anime) of the first quarter of 2024, or even of the year, and Solo Leveling did not disappoint fans eager to (re)discover the adventures by Sung Jin-woo. The webtoon phenomenon from South Korea which has attracted millions of readers all over the world now brings millions of Crunchyroll subscribers to their screens every week. The simulcast platform intends to thank them. To do this, she gives them an unexpected gift even before the end of season 1.

There is no need to introduce the most popular webtoon both in South Korea and the rest of the world. Solo Leveling is originally a web novel published on the KakaoPage platform between 2015 and 2016. Faced with the success of the literary work, a “comic book” adaptation is under construction and will also be released on KakaoPage in 2018. After 14 volumes and 200 chapters, the webtoon ends in 2021. However, the franchise is only just beginning . The Solo Leveling universe is expanding with the spin-off web novel Ragnarok started in April 2023 and still in progress. It should be adapted into a webtoon from 2024.

A video game is also in development. The action-RPG Solo Leveling: ARISE will be released in spring 2024. And the japanimation in all this? After years of rumors and then waiting, the anime Solo Leveling produced by A1-Pictures (Fairy Tail, Mashle, NieR Automata Ver1.1a) arrives in January 2024 on the simulcast platform (for simultaneous broadcast) Crunchyroll. Consisting of 12 episodes (+1 recap), season 1 will end on March 31. After 8 episodes, the anime Solo Leveling appeals to fans of the saga and japanimation who give it a rating of 8.42/10 on MyAnimeList, which places it 168th among the best anime of all time.

A “Solo Leveling” documentary

Season 1 is not yet finished, but Crunchyroll is already thinking about the future of the franchise imagined on paper by Chugong and illustrated by Dubu (Redice Studio). Before thinking about a possible season 2, the SVOD service offers fans a two-part documentary. Soberly titled “The Leveling of Solo Leveling”, it looks back on the Solo Leveling “miracle”, from the creation of the web novel to the broadcast of the first episodes of the animated series. Featuring around twenty interviews conducted in South Korea and Japan, the documentary is the result of close collaboration between Crunchyroll and the French company AllSo, whose offices are located in Paris.

The release dates for episode 1 “A Hunter Rise” and episode 2 “Second Awakening” will be communicated shortly by Crunchyroll.
