The ultra-competitive SVOD market will witness the thunderous arrival in January 2024 of a new player determined to take market share from Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, etc. With an already very rich catalog and a free offer, this streaming service hits hard. The presence of a science fiction film with a unique concept that can be summed up as “Call of Duty with real humans” is another major argument in its favor.

On January 8, 2024, the main PAF channel (for Paysage Audiovisuel Français) inaugurates its brand new streaming platform intended to overshadow the main market players in France, namely Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV+ , Paramount+ and to a lesser extent Crunchyroll for everything related to anime. TF1+ (formerly MyTF1) offers a free offer – with advertising – unlike the other SVOD services mentioned previously. However, for 5.99 euros/month, it is possible to remove said advertisements and even gain preview access to certain specific content.

Call of Duty with “human” avatars

What if the avatars of first-person shooter games were actually real human beings controlled remotely by players? This is the starting postulate of Ultimate Game directed and scripted by the duo Mark Neveldine / Brian Taylor (the Crank saga) with Gerard Butler in the lead. This actor who notably played the main role in 300, Gods of Egypt and The Fall of the White House does it again here, and opposite Michael C Hall (Dexter, Paycheck) and Amber Valletta (The Transporter 2, Hitch, expert in seduction) the time of a story carried out with a beating.

Gamer from its original title is a science fiction film, and more precisely an anticipation film which sets its plot in 2034 when a genius engineer manages to create a technology allowing the remote control of another human being. Several “life-size” games were then put on the market, including Society – a trashy “The Sims” – and Slayers – a necessarily realistic FPS (for First Person Shooter). And for anyone who missed Ultimate Game in theaters in 2009, it is now available for free on TF1+. Here is the official synopsis for Gamer:

In the near future, death row inmates are forced to fight in a Doom-like environment. Convict Kable, controlled by Simon, an outstanding teenage gamer, must survive thirty games to be freed. – IMDB
