After the success of the first season in 2022, House of the Dragon returns this summer with a second part. Following an official announcement from HBO, three actors do not appear to be returning in this sequel. And no, we’re not talking about those who are already dead!

Given the global success of Game of Thrones, it was obvious that HBO would continue to capitalize on the popularity of the universe based on the novels of George RR Martin. Thus, in 2022, we were treated to the first season of House of the Dragon, a spin-off which takes place two hundred years before the events of the show known to all. We follow the adventures and intrigues around the famous Targaryen family which dominated Westeros before a certain upheaval.

Like Game of Thrones, the first season of this spin-off was very popular, at least according to the rating sites on the internet. For example, on Rotten Tomatoes, we observe that the show is recommended 93% by critics and 82% by the public. A resounding success which encouraged HBO to produce a second season straight away. While the writers’ strike paralyzed Hollywood, the show was one of the rare productions not to be directly impacted by this major event for the world of culture. So, it is in the summer of 2024 that spectators will be able to discover season 2 of House of the Dragon… with a few faces missing.

Faces missing in season 2 of House of the Dragon

Recently, HBO released a press release through the voice of Ryan Condal, the co-creator, showrunner and executive producer of House of the Dragon, to confirm sixteen actors who will return in this second season. Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy and Ewan Mitchell have been confirmed as being present in this part. On the other hand, some faces very popular with fans will be present, or at least have not been confirmed by HBO. However, since these are important roles, we can imagine that this means that they will not be present at all.

So, the three actors who do not seem to be returning in season 2 of House of the Dragon are Graham McTavish, Emily Carrey and especially Milly Alock. To put things in context, the first plays Ser Harrold Westerling who we could see until the ninth episode of the first season, while his name was simply in the last. On the other hand, as for two other actresses, These are respectively Alicent Hightower and Rhaenyra Targaryen, but in their younger version. These same characters are played by Olivia Cooke and Emma d’Arcy in their contemporary version. So, this seems to indicate that we will not be entitled to flashbacks in this second season. In any case, you’ll have to find out for yourself this summer.
