More than twenty years after the films were released in theaters, John Rhys-Davies admitted in a podcast that he was convinced that the film adaptation of Lord of the Rings would be a huge failure. It must be said that at first glance this project seemed extremely ambitious and that Peter Jackson did not seem to be such an experienced director.
When I heard they were making Lord of the Rings movies. I said, “Oh yeah, good luck.” And who does it? Peter Jackson, who made one or two wonderful little films. Does he have the slightest idea of what really awaits him? (…) And I said to myself, “The Lord of the Rings”, it’s going to be a real fiasco.
While he thought that the first film would be a resounding failure and that the other two would be released on cassette without being shown in cinemas, he still let himself be tempted by this adventure. Needless to say, he made the right decision., even though wearing the prosthetics to look like Gimli made his life difficult.
