Science fiction is hard to write for James Cameron

While this genre may have been known to be less accessible in the past, the science fiction seems to be making a big comeback in the popular landscape. Whether it is with Dune, Avatar or even Alienthere are many big-budget films that are choosing to bet on science fiction at the moment. And among the most prolific directors of the genre, we obviously find James Cameron. After creating Terminator and directing Aliens, the return, the Canadian director finally found his favorite universe with the Avatar saga. However, while one might think that he is perfectly comfortable with science fiction, James Cameron recently admitted that he was finding scripts like this increasingly difficult to write:

We’re at a point now where it’s getting harder and harder to write science fiction because we live in a science fiction world on a daily basis. I’m working on themes that I’d like to put into a new Terminator movie or potentially some kind of reboot and it’s hard right now because I want to let the smoke clear. It’s going to be a ride that we’re likely to watch for the rest of human history but the next few years will be critical.

Questioned by our colleagues from The Guardian, James Cameron therefore seems to believe that new technologies and the advancement of society are getting closer and closer to what science fiction stories were warning us about a few years ago.. It is difficult in this context to continue writing stories of this kind, which are supposed to move away from the real world in order to better talk about it. On this subject, he jokes that he “warned us in 1984” but we didn’t listen to him. Even if Skynet’s AI is not the same as the one that is starting to cause debate today, he still notes some similarities between the two artificial intelligences and in particular the way in which they share a certain threat to humanity and how they are changing the world as we know it.

The director is not likely to retire anytime soon

Yet even though James Cameron is starting to have difficulty writing science fiction scripts, he has no plans to stop anytime soon. Having recently celebrated his seventieth birthday, the Canadian director is currently working on Avatar 3 and confirms that he is in great shape to do so. A few weeks ago he said:

Look, we all face a limited amount of time to do things in this life. I think you are more aware of that and perhaps prioritizing. I love the work I am doing now and have no complaints. As long as I am healthy and active and doing things that stimulate me creatively and intellectually, I am a happy man.

The Avatar franchise seems to be the one that has stimulated him the most in recent years, to the point that he is continuing his project to make at least 5 films. Recently, the second installment, The Way of Water, was a hit at the cinema, and the third is currently in production. He has also confirmed its title Avatar: Fire and Ash during the last D23 as well as its release date for the December 19, 2025. According to him, this third film “will not be what people expect but will be what people want“. We will have to be a little patient to be sure.
