The Eternals is definitely a divisive film in the MCU, which has generated a lot of conflicting opinions. While there was talk of a cancellation recently, the big boss of the Marvel Extended Universe would try to ensure that that is not the case.
Not so eternal
In 2021, the Marvel Cinematic Universe brought The Eternals to theaters: a film with a five-star cast including Barry Keoghan, Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Gemma Chan and Harry Styles in the lead roles. They put on the costume of Eternals, extremely powerful superheroes, responsible for watching over the Earth for millennia in the shadows, notably having to repel the monstrous Deviants.
Against a backdrop of cosmic issues and taking the Celestials at its center, the public has often compared Chloé Zhao’s feature film to that of a DC Comics stamped adventure, an experience which was rather a game-changer in an often watered-down MCU. And if, even today, The Eternals is still debated – some love it, others hate it – it seems that the timid results at the box office did not necessarily convince Disney to make a sequel. Well, maybe not.
Back from the dead ?
Basically, The Eternals 2 was a real Disney project… in any case, before the MCU more or less collapsed in recent years. Since then, Marvel has revised its plans, preferring to release fewer films and series, but of better quality. In the pile, It was only said a few months ago that Bob Igger, boss of the big-eared firm, had canceled the film (and not only that, by the way). Quite simply.
Although there’s nothing official about it, the rumor was persistent and, frankly, quite credible. But now another rumor, put forward by Marvel Updates, comes to counterbalance the whole thing: Kevin Feige, at the head of the MCU, would ultimately go out of his way to make The Eternals 2 happen.
Obviously, it is still difficult to see clearly in this still very vague matter, about which we would like a little less hearsay: anyway, Marvel’s new guidelines to want films that are sometimes more mature and more violent (a label was notably created for this, concerning the future Daredevil Born Again and Blade for example) could well align with the vision of a new adventure of the Eternals. We will see.
