The life of an actor is full of surprises and anomalies of all kinds! So even if Keanu Reeves does not yet have a role in the MCU, he was tempted by this completely crazy animated film.

Even though Marvel and the MCU bring together some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, Keanu Reeves (John Wick, Matrix) doesn’t yet have a place there! However, it is not for lack of showing an interest in the thing… In October 2022, on the set of the show Jimmy Kimmel, the actor explained that his “ten-year-old self” would have loved to play Ghost Rider, famous biker half man half demon (played by Nicolas Cage in the eponymous feature films from 2007 | 2011). “The way the Marvel films have developed and what they represent is truly spectacular. It would be great to be able to be part of it,” admits Keanu Reeves. The following year: in an interview given to ComicBook, Kevin Feige (president of Marvel Studio) says that he and his colleagues “really want to find the right way” to welcome the actor. “We talk to him about almost every project we do.”

Not in the MCU, but under the ocean

If Keanu Reeves has not yet worn a tight jumpsuit alongside Chris Hemsworth, Tom Holland or Brie Larson, the man is in any case not afraid to “get wet” for other roles! Because yes, a little over a year ago, the star of John Wick joined the cast of SpongeBob in Troubled Waters, an animated film about the most famous sponge on the planet. Reeves plays “Soage”, a “wise man who lives in sage” (in the original version the two words are “wise”). A sort of spiritual guide who supports Bob | his Patrick in their adventure. Here the sponge is looking for his snail Gary.

But how did fighting star Keanu Reeves end up on this feature film? Well, it’s very simple: the director of SpongeBob in Troubled Waters – Tom Hill – had imagined the actor from the start for the role. “We wanted a spirit guide character who was a bit of a sensei and Keanu kept popping up in my head,” he explains in a interview of 2021… “One of our producers knew him and put us in touch. And when Keanu saw what we were envisioning for the role, he was like “yeah, I’ll do it!” “Honestly, we were lucky.” In the past, the actor lent his voice to the dog Batman from Krypto and the Super Animals as well as Duke Caboom, Canadian stuntman from Toy Story 4. SpongeBob SquarePants is available on Netflix.
