A trailer that makes sparks fly

After a very quiet year for Marvel in years on the cinema side, the House of Ideas seems to want to get back to work for 2025. With 3 films scheduled for this period, MCU fans will have plenty to keep them busy. First up is Captain America: Brave New World on February 12, 2025, with Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) officially taking over from Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) on the bill. Then comes the Marvel-style reboot of the Fantastic Four with Pedro Pascal as Mister Fantastic and Vanessa Kirby as the Invisible Woman, all scheduled for July 2025.

And in between, we have our subject of the day, Thunderbolts*, scheduled for April 2025 in theaters. The film aims to bring together former MCU villains to team up against a common threat. Here’s the cast:

• Bucky Barnes / The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) : A former assassin and best friend of Steve Rogers, Bucky is on a quest for redemption after his years as the Winter Soldier.

• Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) : The sister of Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow), she is a formidable spy and assassin, having made her debut in Black Widow (2021) and Hawkeye.

• John Walker / US Agent (Wyatt Russell) : Introduced in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, John Walker is the controversial former replacement for Captain America, a soldier with harsher morals.

• Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko) : First seen in Black Widow (2021), Taskmaster is a formidable fighter capable of mimicking her opponents’ fighting techniques.

• Red Guardian (David Harbour) : The Soviet “Captain America”, seen in Black Widow (2021), he is a character who is both comical and dangerous.

• Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) : Featured in Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018), Ghost has the ability to become intangible. She is a tragic figure seeking to survive her unstable state.

• Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) : Already appearing in several productions, including The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Black Widow, Valentina seems to be the person who recruits and brings together these characters to form the Thunderbolts team. She has a mysterious agenda, and some compare her to Nick Fury, but with more dubious methods.

Yes, we can say it, it’s Marvel’s Suicide Squad! The few lucky ones who were allowed to attend the San Diego Comic-Con last July had already been able to view some images of this first trailer released to the general public on Monday, September 23, 2024, with carefully choreographed fights. Promising!

What are the Thunderbolts* basically?

The Thunderbolts were originally introduced as a team of supervillains who adopted false heroic identities in order to rehabilitate themselves in the public eye. This team consisted of former enemies of the Avengers, such as Baron Zemo, who posed as the hero called Citizen V. The goal was to gain the public’s trust before implementing their true plans.

The Thunderbolts’ unique feature is that some members of the group are beginning to enjoy their new role as heroes. Over time, many of them genuinely want to redeem themselves. This leads to internal conflicts, particularly between those who want to continue their former criminal activities and those who genuinely seek to become heroes.

This duality between redemption and manipulation is one of the central themes of the team, like Bucky, who seems to be the leader of this team made on the fly.
