Star Wars is by far the science fiction franchise, and more generally one of the most popular sagas in the world. Only One Piece or even Dragon Ball are able to compete with the universe imagined in 1977 by George Lucas. However, this distant galaxy has its detractors. Disney-branded projects are regularly attacked by fans. The prelogy met the same fate when it was released, but things changed over time.

Star Wars, a prelogy saved by its time

The Star Wars prequel trilogy directed by George Lucas is the source of ever more heated debates within fan communities who struggle to know whether YES or NO the prelogy is worthy of the Skywalker saga. The three films (The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith) had difficult times, especially upon their release, before finally returning to the odor of sanctity a few years later. During an interview with our colleague Jimmy Kimmel (see the video below), the interpreter of Obi-Wan Kenobi Ewan McGregor recounts how the prelogy regained popularity after suffering for years of attacks from fans, mainly on social networks. In 2024, these same networks are at the origin of a campaign against Star Wars series and films.

Something changed, and part of it was that I had the opportunity to meet fans who loved the films we were making. I also think that when they came out, there were people who didn’t really like them. It’s interesting because sometimes people react negatively when they see something right away, but years later they end up saying “yes, I like that.” I think they are different types of people. The people I know who really loved the movies were kids back then. “Nobody listened to them because there was no internet, you know, and they were just kids. But now I feel closer to them and I really like them. – Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan Kenobi)

Ewan McGregor continues the interview by returning to the vision of George Lucas and the filmmaker’s desire to try new things while allowing spectators to once again feel the thrill of the original trilogy on the big screen. This almost impossible gap between novelty and nostalgia is probably responsible for the disenchantment of some Star Wars fans with the prelogy.
