Two iconic roles, and then nothing…

Unless you grew up in the 1980s and paid particular attention to the names of the actors in your favorite films at that time, the name of Ke Huy Quan shouldn’t tell you much. However, in 1984 and 1985, he took on two of the most popular roles of the time in Hollywood and worked with two absolutely phenomenal directors: George Lucas And Steven Spielberg. Indeed, Ke Huy Quan began his acting career playing Half Moon in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Data in The Goonies. Suffice to say that his energy and his sympathy immediately caught the eye of the spectators who still remember these characters 40 years later.

Unfortunately, after these two huge successes, Ke Huy Quan’s career did not really take off, far from it. Indeed, even if he still managed to play in a few minor films and TV series like California Man, Second Time Around Or Be a teacher and shut up, he never managed to return to the forefront. Invited to the microphone of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the actor confided that opportunities became rarer after his work in The Goonies And Indiana Jones. He sometimes had to wait more than a year and a half before getting a new opportunity, and it was often for minor projects. Eventually, Ke Huy Quan decided to give up and take another path by becoming a stunt coordinator and then assistant directortwo shadowy professions which still allowed him to keep a foothold in the industry.

…until a triumphant return to the forefront

19 years after his last role as an actor, Ke Huy Quan, however, tried again and was finally selected for a role in the film Ohana or the hidden treasure. Obviously, it wasn’t exactly the film of the century… but perhaps it was exactly what it needed before making a triumphant return to the spotlight. Indeed, barely a year after his return as an actor, Ke Huy Quan landed a major role in the sci-fi film Everything Everywhere All at Once directed by Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. This name should normally tell you something since it is none other than the film which won 7 Oscars in 2022, including those of best film and some best achievement. Even better, Ke Huy Quan walked away with his own statuette since his role earned him the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

And if you thought that his career was going to take a moment of emptiness like in the 1980s, everything suggests that this will not be the case! Indeed, very quickly after the release of Everything Everywhere All at Once, Ke Huy Quan received a call from Kevin Feige himself. The latter then suggested that he join the MCU by interpreting Ouroborosa character from the series Loki which you may have seen in season 2. Speaking to the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the actor said:

When (Everything Everywhere All at Once) came out, the first call I got was from Kevin Feige, who kindly asked me if I wanted to join the MCU. I called Jonathan (Wang) and said, “You know what? No one wants to hire me except Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Wong Kar-wai, the Daniels and Kevin Feige. It’s incredible ! 2022 is the year I will always remember as one of the happiest of my life!

If we had to wait 40 years to see him return to the place he deserved, everything seems to indicate that Ke Huy Quan does not intend to leave again anytime soon! Thanks to his role in the MCU and the recognition he received by playing in Everything Everywhere All at Once, the actor could well become one of the most popular of the moment. A beautiful revenge on life which proves that it is sometimes good to keep hope and try again, even several decades later.
