At the start of 2024, Netflix original productions continue to flood in and In Full Flight, released on January 12 on the platform, surprisingly takes first place in the ranking.

Arriving on January 12 on the Netflix platform, Lift or En plein vol for the French version surprised everyone by rising to the top of the ranking of most watched content. However, the critics are far from being complimentary towards it with a score of 32% on Rotten Tomatoes.

In mid-flight, what is it about?

The unexpected success of this year is Lift (or In full flight) which passes in front of everyone on the Netflix platform. The film is directed by Francis Gary Gray, known for his work on the acclaimed Straight Outta Compton, and more recently Men in Black International. The story tells of a skilled and experienced art thief who plans a supposedly impossible heist with his elite team whose goal is to steal half a billion dollars in gold from a plane in full flight. The platform offered itself a five-star cast with Kevin Hart as captain and his team made up of Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Sam Worthington, Ursula Corbero (Tokyo in the Casa de papel) Vincent d’Onofrio, and finally Jean Reno as big bad guy who likes to collaborate with Netflix. The feature film has already surpassed the Circle of Snows released a week before, which tells the true story of a Uruguayan plane which crashed in 1972 in the heart of the Andes and its survivors who try to survive. The comedy has completely overshadowed the drama.

What does the press think?

Despite the success, the press seems generally unanimous around the title. Many speak of a real turnip. For IGN, In Full Flight, it’s not a good comedy, the five-star cast is poorly used, there is little effort in terms of jokes. For the New York Times, Kevin Hart tries to get closer to Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible, but does not have his charisma. Le Parisien supports the same idea concerning the American actor, but still highlighting Camila played by Ursula Corbero and Billy Magnussen’s character named Magnus, who, according to them, “perfectly combine touches of humor and performance while tension”. On the Ecran large side, we go harder by describing the feature film as “a competition disaster with strangely accidental old-fashionedness”. To summarize the general idea, if we have nothing better to do, you can let yourself be tempted by In Flight available on Netflix. —
