Good news can have a bitter aftertaste. The Black Knight is not ready to come out of retirement. Warner Bros. has just postponed the sequel to The Batman directed by Matt Reeves with Robert Pattinson to play the protector of Gotham. The supposed reason is laudable. The company does not want to rush Bruce Wayne’s return to the cinema, but that’s not all.

The Batman 2 pushed back a year

A new version of Batman hits the cinemas in 2022 and everyone agrees. The film directed by Matt Reeves is a critical (85% on RottenTomatoes) and commercial success (US$772 million at the international box office). The start of work on a direct sequel just a few weeks after its theatrical release was in no way a surprise. Robert Pattinson was supposed to don the vigilante costume again on October 2, 2025, but Warner Bros. plans. have recently changed.

According to our colleagues at DeadlineThe Batman 2 has just been pushed back a full year. The Dark Knight will deliver expeditious justice in cinemas on October 2, 2026 in the United States (probably September 30, 2026 in France) instead of October 3, 2025. The reasons “mentioned” to justify such a postponement involve the double strike of screenwriters and actors which paralyzed Hollywood in 2023 as well as the birth of the DCU supervised by James Gunn (the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, The Suicide Squad) and Peter Safran .

The DCU versus the Elseworlds

In January 2023, James Gunn definitively buries the DC Extended Universe launched by Zack Snyder and announces the “reboot” of the DC universe in cinema, the launch of which is set for 2025. Superman, directed by the boss of DC Studios himself, will be released on July 11, 2025. This film’s mission is to introduce the DC Universe and revitalize a Justice League which has been in disarray since the successive failures of Black Adam (2022), Shazam! Rage of the Gods (2023), The Flash (2023), Blue Beetle (2023) and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023). Aware of the importance of this project, Warner Bros. made the decision to free up media space in order to give the Man of Steel every chance.

Additionally, another Batman adaptation that is an integral part of this building lore is in development. Directed by Andy Muschietti, the feature film is currently called The Brave and The Bold and should focus on the relationship between Bruce Wayne and his son Damian. No release date has been announced yet. Facing the DCU, the Elseworlds (alternative universes developed in cinema) are being organized. The first to be invited to the cinema will be Joker: Folie à Deux, which is scheduled for release on October 2, 2024. The Batman will therefore be released two years later.
