It’s the Netflix phenomenon of the moment! The 3-Body Problem is currently delighting science fiction fans. Adaptation of the literary saga by Liu Cixin, this series is directed by David Benioff and DB Weiss who are mainly known for their work on the iconic HBO production Game of Thrones. Out of curiosity, many subscribers began watching, and were carried away by a captivating and original plot.
Since its release a few weeks ago, feedback has been mostly positive. This science fiction series has risen to first place among the most viewed productions on the scarlet streaming platform in many countries, including France. However, despite this success, it is not enough compared to the investment in this ambitious production which has a budget of 20 million dollars per episode. Barely released, some are already expecting this series to suffer the same fate as many others which have now sunk into oblivion, that is to say an outright cancellation. Will The 3-Body Problem suffer this tragic fate? Alas, the chances are high.
Not a big enough success for The 3-Body Problem
Certainly, this series has gathered more than 11 million hours of viewing, but is not one of Netflix’s biggest series launches. For comparison, Avatar: The Last Airbender combined double that…in just four days! In other words, this series is not successful enough for it to be 100% profitable. This performance is unfortunately similar to other Netflix productions like 1899.
Netflix and cancellations are unfortunately a big story that doesn’t seem ready to end. At the end of last year, the scarlet platform separated from five series, some of which were not failures like Shadow and Bone. In short, The 3-Body Problem will need to still have a significant number of views to have a chance of being renewed. At the moment, the future of this series is unclear and some viewers are expecting unpleasant news.
