After the success of the first part in 2014, this saga mixing espionage and comedy returned in 2017 with a second opus. Even if it was less well received than the original film, this sequel is still worth watching, especially since it is available for free on TF1+ for a few more days!

Kingsman, new benchmark for espionage?

In 2014, Kingsman was one of the biggest surprises at the box office. Very free adaptation of the comic series written by Mark Millar and drawn by Dave Gibbons, we follow the adventures of Gary “Eggsy” Unwin (Taron Egerton), a kid from the modest British suburbs, who will find himself becoming a secret agent of the secret organization Kingsman. With Harry (Colin Firth) as his mentor, our hero will help him prevent the Machiavellian plans of Richmond Valentine (Samuel L. Jackson), a billionaire American philanthropist.

In addition to its effective offbeat tone, the first Kingsman also left its mark with its particularly well-filmed action scenes.. And for good reason, the film is directed by Matthew Vaughn, known for having made Kick-Ass and X-Men: The Beginning. With its very comics side in its approach, Kingsman: Secret Service was a real popular success. Recommended at 75% by critics on Rotten Tomatoes and 84% by audiences, it grossed over $400 million on a budget of $80 million. A nice five for his studio which hastened to follow up, now available on TF1+.

A sequel worthy of the first film?

Currently on TF1+, you can watch Kingsman: The Golden Circle for free until Monday October 14. Released in 2017, it is a direct sequel to the first part. We find Eggsy who is now spending happy days with the Swedish princess Tilde, while continuing to work for Kingsman. Unfortunately, this tranquility is disrupted when Charlie, one of Kingsman’s applicants, is killed and the agency’s headquarters is destroyed. With only Eggsy and Merlin remaining, they will have to meet their American counterparts, the Statesman, they will confront the person responsible for all this : Poppy Adams, a trafficker at the head of the most powerful drug cartel in the world, the Golden Circle. His goal: to ransom the world to legalize its business!

Recommended 50% by critics and 64% by spectators, Kingsman: The Golden Circle was less well received than the first part. However, that did not prevent it from generating so much revenue, with more than $410 million generated at the box office, but for a budget of $100 million this time. To summarize the general consensus, we can say that this second installment has everything that made its predecessor so fun, but lacks the creative spark of the original. In any case, one thing is certain, it is that it is doing better than the last part to date, The King’s Man, released in 2021, which barely brought in 126 million dollars for a budget of 100 million. This prequel seems to have buried the franchise that we are not ready to see again for a while…
