Doug Liman reinvents an 80s classic for Amazon Prime subscribers with “Road House”! The adaptation of David Lee’s famous thriller has yet to prove itself with a lackluster release.

Originally released in 1989, “Road House” returns to our screens on March 21, 2024! Despite its upcoming release, an avalanche of drama has descended on the film. For the director, the exclusive release on the “Prime Video” platform is a betrayal. A discontent that he even expressed by protesting against GAFAM during its first broadcast at the SXSW festival. Nevertheless, this film’s promise to do better than its predecessor seems to be kept. Douge Liman believes: “We made Road House a resounding success, it deserves to end up on the big screen.”

“Road House”, the story of a converted fighter

After Patrick Swayze, Jake Gyllenhaal takes over the role of Elwood Dalton, an MMA fighter. As he tries to escape his past, his reputation for his penchant for violence catches up with him. Everything accelerates when a truck stop owner hears about him. She decides to recruit him as a bouncer to protect her poorly attended establishment. It’s a masterstroke for the boss since no one manages to confront her. But the stakes are becoming more and more important: new bad guys are arriving and it’s the law of the jungle! “Road House” is an action film, highlighting the fights and their sometimes excessive violence. The film sees far ahead with the presence of surprising antagonists like martial artist Conor McGregor, ready to do battle against Jake Gyllenhaal!

What does the press think?

Unfortunately for Doug Liman, his vision of the film was not shared by the press. Critics differ on the remake of “Road House”: “we clearly feel a lack of personality” underlines Matt’s Movie Review. While there’s no shortage of action, the changes made to this version make the film more generic than the original. Others, like Little White Lies, believe that there is, on the contrary, not enough action and that the film suffers from a certain lack of dynamism. The lack of depth is felt in this “too noisy” film. However, it remains entertaining and good to watch with friends. In addition, Conor McGregor’s performance is praised. He plays his role as a villain brilliantly.
